This is the chilling ending from the 1972 movie “Cabaret,” showing how fascism easy masquerades as patriotism and hope, and can effortlessly spread through an unsuspecting populace, who unknowingly end up supporting the worst crimes against humanity ever committed.
The two men in the scene who grow increasingly concerned by what they are seeing, and get up to leave and drive away, are a gay couple who flee Germany, as the liberal, accepting German democracy between the world wars succumbs to Nazism.
It could happen here if we don’t resist it and fight every step of the way.
